Cabin in the woods



Cabin in the woods redefined what a movie going experience was for me at the time when it came out. I remember going by myself after being forced out of the house by my mom who was hosting a wine night with the other single moms of the neighborhood. At first when I bought the ticket I was hesitant, thinking that I was going to watch just another run of the mill horror flick with the same jump scares and loud noises they all rehash time and time again. Especially since I had already seen some trailers for it too and they all made it seem like a very predictable watch. But upon viewing it, I was surprised to find that it took every horror trope I could think of and flipped them in very different and unique ways. This movie knew what it was and embraced it.  It was funny and scary in the best ways. I had a lot of fun with it. This is a movie that my friends and me revisit frequently because of how ridiculous it is. Whenever you think you know what’s going to happen next it switches it up on you. Visually speaking, it also holds it’s own bringing back monsters that people could recognize and some new ones that’ll definitely not be forgotten. I definitely recommend this movie to anyone who’s given up on horror movies.

Space Opera

Space opera is a genre that even at its worst I still find it to be really appealing. For this week I read the comic-book Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. I really liked the way it was illustrated and found it to be a really fun read. I especially liked how right from the get go we're plunged into some crazy action with little breathing time. My favorite aspect of this comic book is how even the villains have good motives and have their own reasons for being the way they are. A good example of this is Will, the freelancer/bounty hunter who is in pursuit of them. Even he has problems and inner demons he is facing and I like seeing that hidden side to characters that aren't the main focus of the story. I really enjoyed the forbidden love aspect to the story too and how they are pursued by officials from all over the galaxy. It's pretty charming to see it be narrated by their daughter who we witness grow up. This is definitely a story Im going to keep reading.

Witches and Women in Genre

For this week I read Howl's moving castle by Diana Wynne Jones. It was a fun read and overall I liked the concept of it and the character building. The novel was definitely darker than the movie which I really liked. The main antagonist of this book is the Witch of the Waste, an old hag whose very self absorbed and wicked. Her actions don't follow any moral compass as she acts in very vindictive ways. Similar to Howl, the witch's power comes from a fire demon that consumes her heart and leaves nothing good in her. Although Howl has a softer heart and can be saved from being consumed, the witch's heart must've have not been as strong or kind to begin with. Stereotypically witches are shown to be evil and usually old and ugly. Howl's moving castle follows a similar trope. I personally like witches but I'm not a big fan of the same type of witch that's constantly being reused. It'd be more refreshing to see something that breaks that mold. Hopefully ...

The Heroic Journey

I remember watching the Lord of the rings movies with my dad as a kid and I never forgot how invested I would get with the story and the characters. The word "epic" is what comes to mind whenever I hear anybody talk about lord of the rings. As a fan of the movies the books always seemed too intimating and quite long for my taste. With the hobbit I had a similar hesitation and honestly it was kind of a tough read at times, I didn't really enjoy how things were overly described in some cases and it kind of thru me off when the characters broke into song (not hating on the story but I personally don't like musicals and stuff like that). With that being said tho I really liked how it felt like more of a parable that was being told to me. It felt magical less dark than the lord of the rings.
